CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

MASTER OF PUPPETS

“TELEMETRY COMPLETE,” the vehicle previously known as Black Panther’s drilling machine told them. “New coordinates determined,” the now-a-rocket-ship added.

What new coordinates? Emma wanted to know. She was standing in the cockpit between the seated Black Panther and Ant-Man. The former was piloting the ship. The latter was doing something technical-looking with a holographic control panel. She liked the view of the Earth from up here. The world was a living map of blues, greens and browns; above, the clouds formed ever-changing, ephemeral continents of their own. She was pretty sure she could see Wakanda from here.

“Whatever this signal is, it looks like you’ve been tracking it for quite some time,” Ant-Man said to Black Panther.

“Mind telling us what hell is going on, Panther, or should we just start guessing?” Emma asked. She understood that the three of them didn’t know each other and therefore couldn’t trust each other. She even understood how T’Challa had no choice, given his position, but to play the alpha in any situation. She had, after all, met more than her fair share of men like him in the past. The mushroom treatment, however, was starting to feel more like showmanship than anything else. Once she could have easily eviscerated his brain but her powers were somewhat diminished these days. Even so, and even with his defenses and the spirit of the primal cat that lived in his head, if Black Panther didn’t start playing straight with them she would find a way in. After all technology and mysticism could only get you so far.

It was a moment or two before Black Panther answered them. Emma suspected that he was deciding how much to tell them.

“I’m tracing a signal from a call I received. The call that led us to the center of the Earth.” he finally said.

Emma could hear the tone of resignation in his voice. She suspected this was the unvarnished truth. She had no doubt T’Challa was a skilled diplomat but, despite what people thought, that did not mean he was a skilled liar. She knew liars. She had learned from the best.

The Wakandan rocket ship was still rising up into the night sky.

“That would mean—” she started as she became aware of light above them.

“That all this time we’ve been searching for something unseen without realizing that all we needed to do was open our eyes and look up,” Black Panther finished.

Emma didn’t know much about satellites but the one she was staring at looked sophisticated. As in, more sophisticated than the ship they were in. As in, a higher level of technology than Wakanda—the most technologically advanced place on Earth. It was formed of tech that looked like it could give the Kree a run for their money.

The satellite was a pillar spotted with engines and tanks. A ring—which she guessed was a habitation area—revolved around the central shaft of the pillar. Two massive rectangular sails, stretching out to obscure the heavens, topped the pillar. She guessed the sails collected solar energy and/or other forms of power from the cosmos.
